Scented candles and pets: how to fragrance your home safely

A beautifully scented home and a healthy pet are not mutually exclusive. With the right products and a few simple rules, you can enjoy both. It all comes down to the ingredients used and the way you choose to fragrance your home.

The short answer

Having a dog or a cat does not mean you have to give up scented candles. In general, the greatest risks for pets are linked to certain concentrated essential oils and to ultrasonic diffusers that disperse them constantly into the air. Soy wax candles made with fine-fragrance oils, without pure essential oils and with a clean burn, can be a better choice for homes shared with animals. At Little Paris Atelier we use only fine-fragrance oils and high-quality soy wax, without pure essential oils, to offer a pleasant scented experience and a clean burn. Whichever candle you choose, air the room after use, never leave a flame unattended and make sure your pet cannot reach the hot vessel. If you keep birds, it is best to avoid scented products altogether, as they are far more sensitive to airborne substances.

Essential oils vs fine-fragrance oils: why the difference matters

This distinction is the single most important thing to know if you are a pet owner who also wants a beautifully scented home.

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, and some of them can be irritating or toxic to certain animals, especially cats and birds, particularly when they are dispersed constantly into the air.

Fine-fragrance oils are formulated differently. They are created specifically for scented products and follow the standards of IFRA (International Fragrance Association), which set usage limits for each product category. Unlike products based on pure essential oils, candles made with fine-fragrance oils are generally a more suitable choice for anyone who wants a beautifully scented home and shares it with pets.

Why Little Paris Atelier is different

At Little Paris Atelier we use vegan fine-fragrance oils, as in niche perfumery, and high-quality soy wax. We do not use pure essential oils, paraffin or metal-core wicks in our candles. We choose every raw material carefully to achieve a clean burn, a balanced fragrance and a pleasant experience in any home. It is a choice about the quality of the product as much as about your comfort and that of everyone you share your home with, pets included.

Can home fragrances be dangerous for pets?

Yes, some home fragrance products can pose a risk to pets, especially when they contain concentrated essential oils or are used to disperse scented substances continuously into the air, as happens with some ultrasonic diffusers. According to the ASPCA, animals have a far more developed sense of smell than humans, which means they can be more sensitive to certain ingredients and concentrations.

The risk depends on the type of product, the ingredients used, the length of exposure and the species of animal. Cats and birds are generally the most sensitive, and dogs can also be affected by certain substances. For example, a soy wax candle with a fine-fragrance oil, used occasionally in a well-ventilated room, is a very different situation from the continuous use of an ultrasonic diffuser with a concentrated essential oil in a closed space.

Why cats are the most vulnerable

Cats are considered the most sensitive to certain essential oils because their liver has more difficulty metabolising some of the compounds these oils contain. For this reason, exposure to certain substances can have more pronounced effects than in other animals.

Added to this sensitivity is their habit of constantly grooming their fur. If particles of essential oil land on the fur or skin, they can be ingested during grooming. According to VCA Hospitals, kittens, older cats and cats with liver conditions are the most vulnerable.

Which essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs

Not all essential oils are dangerous, but some are recognised by veterinary organisations such as Pet Poison Helpline and VCA Hospitals as posing a risk to cats and dogs. This is why we at Little Paris Atelier do not use pure essential oils in our candles.

Essential oil Toxic to cats Toxic to dogs Main risk In LPA products
Tea tree Yes Yes Nervous system, liver No
Eucalyptus Yes Yes CNS depression, drooling No
Peppermint Yes Yes Liver, mucous membrane irritation No
Cinnamon Yes Yes Severe irritation No
Ylang-ylang Yes Yes Heart rate, lethargy No
Clove Yes Yes Liver, nervous system No
Pine Yes Yes Kidneys, respiratory irritation No
Wintergreen Yes Yes Acutely toxic No

The presence of these essential oils in a product does not automatically mean that any exposure will cause problems, but vets advise caution, especially in homes with cats, birds or animals with pre-existing conditions. Choosing candles made without pure essential oils can reduce this risk.White cat relaxing in a warm interior with a lit candle - Little Paris Atelier

Diffusers and pets: which type is safer

In general, passive reed diffusers are considered a more suitable choice than ultrasonic diffusers, because they do not continuously release fine particles into the air. They release fragrance gradually, through natural evaporation. Ultrasonic diffusers, on the other hand, turn liquid into a fine mist that lingers in the air and can increase a pet's exposure to certain substances, especially when used with concentrated essential oils.

Little Paris Atelier reed diffusers use fine-fragrance oils, not pure essential oils. Placed in a well-ventilated room, away from where your pet sleeps or spends most of its time, they can be a gentle way to keep your home softly scented.

Please note: birds are a special case

Birds have an extremely sensitive respiratory system, which is why vets recommend avoiding scented products and smoke in the rooms where they live. According to VCA Hospitals, they are far more vulnerable to airborne substances than dogs or cats.

If you keep parrots, canaries or other pet birds, the safest option is to avoid using scented candles, diffusers and any other source of fragrance in the same room, including Little Paris Atelier products.

Little Paris Atelier candles: why they are a gentler choice

Not all scented candles are made from the same raw materials. The type of wax, the fragrance and the wick all influence how a candle burns and the experience it offers. Here are the main differences between Little Paris Atelier products and many of the candles available on the market.

Feature Standard candle Little Paris Atelier
Fragrance type May contain pure essential oils or fragrances of variable quality Only vegan fine-fragrance oils, no pure essential oils
Wax type Paraffin (a petroleum derivative), palm wax or blends High-quality soy wax, 100% plant-based
Wick Treated cotton or other wicks with a metal core Natural, untreated fruit-tree wood, no metal core
Burn Visible black soot, especially with paraffin Clean burn, minimal soot
Experience Varies depending on the ingredients used Balanced fragrance, even scent throw and carefully selected ingredients

Which LPA candles and diffusers to choose if you have pets

If you have a dog or a cat, you can keep enjoying scented candles and diffusers, as long as you use them responsibly: in a well-ventilated room, without prolonged exposure and away from where your pet spends most of its time. The fragrances we use do not contain the toxic essential oils documented by the ASPCA and VCA Hospitals.

Safety rules: how to use candles in a home with pets

Even when you choose products made from carefully selected ingredients, the way you use them matters just as much. A few simple rules can help you enjoy a beautifully scented home without compromising your pet's comfort.

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended around pets.
  • Air the room before and after using the candle, especially if your pet spends a lot of time there.
  • Never place the candle within reach of your dog or cat.
  • If you prefer a constant fragrance, choose a passive reed diffuser rather than an ultrasonic one.
  • Take your pet out of the room if you want to use the candle more intensely, then air the room before letting it back in.
  • Avoid using scented products in rooms where birds or reptiles live.
  • Never apply essential oils or fragrances directly to your pet's fur or skin.

How to recognise fragrance poisoning in pets and what to do

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to a substance that could harm it, act quickly. According to VCA Hospitals, symptoms can include excessive drooling, vomiting, tremors, unsteady walking, breathing difficulties, lethargy or traces of scented product on the fur.

Step Action Why
1 Contact your vet immediately Fast intervention can make all the difference
2 Do not induce vomiting unless your vet tells you to In some cases, this can make injuries worse.
3 If the product is on the fur, wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild pet shampoo This helps remove the substance and can limit absorption.
4 Keep the product packaging Your vet will be able to identify the substance more easily.
5 Air the room and move your pet away from the area This reduces continued exposure to the scented substance.

Frequently asked questions about home fragrance and pets

Are Little Paris Atelier candles safe if I have a cat?

Little Paris Atelier candles are made from high-quality soy wax and use fine-fragrance oils, not pure essential oils. Used responsibly, in a well-ventilated room, under supervision and away from your pet, they can be a suitable choice for homes with cats. If you keep birds, it is best to avoid using scented products in the same room.

What is the difference between fine-fragrance oils and essential oils for pets?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, and some of them are recognised as potentially toxic to certain animals. Fine-fragrance oils are formulated differently, following the standards of IFRA (International Fragrance Association). At Little Paris Atelier we use only fine-fragrance oils and no pure essential oils in our candles.

Which LPA diffuser is best if I have pets at home?

Passive reed diffusers are generally a more suitable choice than ultrasonic diffusers when you have pets, because the fragrance is released gradually through natural evaporation. The Moonlight Bliss diffuser is our choice for the bedroom, We Meet Again for the living room or hallway. Keep the diffuser away from your pet's resting place and in a ventilated space.

Why are birds so sensitive to fragrances and candles?

Birds' respiratory system, with its air sacs, makes them extremely vulnerable to any airborne toxin. VCA Hospitals warns that in birds, sudden death can be the only visible sign of poisoning. For this reason, vets recommend avoiding scented products in rooms where birds live.

What should I do if my cat has come into contact with an essential oil?

Treat it as a medical emergency. Contact your vet immediately, do not induce vomiting yourself, wash the affected area with lukewarm water and a mild pet shampoo, and take the product packaging with you. Fast intervention is essential.

How do I scent the bedroom if my pet sleeps with me?

If you prefer a discreet fragrance in the bedroom, a passive reed diffuser can be a good choice. Place it away from where your pet sleeps and air the room every day. If you choose a Little Paris Atelier fragrance, Moonlight Bliss is one of the most appreciated options for its delicate character. Air the bedroom daily, for at least 5 to 10 minutes.

Is soy wax safer for pets than paraffin?

Soy wax is preferred by many premium makers because it generally burns more cleanly and produces less soot when the candle is used correctly. At Little Paris Atelier we use high-quality soy wax for a clean burn and a pleasant scented experience.

Where do I start if I want to try several LPA fragrances?

The Little Paris Atelier Discovery Box includes 6 candles from the collection and lets you try several fragrances before deciding. It is an excellent way to discover the Little Paris Atelier scents and find the one that suits your home best.
