May in Bloom: the scent of Bucharest's linden trees, in your home
Every May, the streets of Bucharest smell of linden. It does not last long. But while it lasts, you can think of nothing else.
The short answer
May in Bloom is the scent of linden blossom, captured by Little Paris Atelier in two formats: a 200g soy wax candle and a premium 120ml reed diffuser. The notes are Linden Blossom, Honey and a bright floral accord. The fragrance brings into your home that May morning when the air in Bucharest smells different from any other day of the year.
Linden and Bucharest
There is a particular moment in May, somewhere between 7 and 10 in the morning, when the streets of Bucharest smell of something other than usual. It is not hard to identify: it is linden blossom, sweet, gently warm, with an almost honeyed depth that slowly settles over everything. On streets lined with old trees, through the parks, along the boulevards with their venerable canopies, the same diffuse scent. The linden tree (Tilia) blooms for a few weeks and, for a short while, makes the city feel like an olfactory space with a personality of its own.
It is not a scent you often find in perfumery. It is hard to capture: volatile, delicate, with a sweetness that fades quickly. That is precisely why, when you recognise it in a candle or a diffuser, the sensation is immediate. You do not remember it from memory. You smell it again, as if you were standing in the street.
When we created May in Bloom, we wanted to keep exactly that sensation. Not an interpretation of linden, but that specific morning, with the air still clean and the blossoms open everywhere.

The May in Bloom fragrance: three notes, one sensation
The formula was built around three olfactory layers that support one another without cancelling each other out:
Linden Blossom. The first impression, and the most vivid. Fresh, floral, with a transparency few notes can replicate. The top note that opens the fragrance and defines it from the very first seconds.
Honey. Not artificially sweet, but that warm, golden depth that anchors the fragrance in a more intimate register. The heart note that holds everything together and gives warmth to the whole formula.
Bright florals. A discreet bouquet, like morning light on an open window. It supports the whole without dominating and lets the fragrance breathe until the very end of the burn.
The result is a clean fragrance, feminine without insisting, nostalgic without being sentimental. It is, as we like to describe it, the scent of late spring.
Expert note
Linden blossom is among the hardest flowers to reproduce in perfumery. Its main aromatic compounds, especially linalool and geraniol, are extremely volatile and degrade quickly. In modern perfumery, the linden note is built from carefully calibrated combinations of floral molecules that approximate the original sensation. When the formula works well, you recognise it at once and never mistake it for anything else. When it does not, you feel that something is missing, even if you cannot name what.

Candle or diffuser: which suits you best
Both formats share the same fragrance and the same olfactory character. The difference lies in how you want to experience it.

The candle is for particular moments: when you light it, when you settle in, when you want to feel the presence of a ritual. The diffuser is for everything else: hallway, bedroom, study, a background note that never stops. Many people use both in the same space, with different roles at different times of day.
The atmosphere you are afterAn open window, morning light on the wooden floor and air that smells of May before the noise of the day begins.
The linden trees bloom for a few weeks a year. After that, the streets of Bucharest smell as they did before.
But you do not have to wait until next May to have this scent close again.

Frequently asked questions about May in Bloom
Which fragrance notes does May in Bloom contain?
May in Bloom has three main notes: Linden Blossom as the top note, Honey as the heart note and a bright floral bouquet as the base. Together, they recreate the sensation of linden trees in bloom in May, with their natural sweetness and discreet floral background.
Is the May in Bloom candle or diffuser better?
It depends on how you want to use the fragrance. The candle suits evening rituals and particular moments, when you want light and fragrance together. The diffuser is ideal if you want the room to smell constantly, without having to look after a flame. Many people use both in the same space.
How long does the May in Bloom diffuser last?
The 120ml diffuser lasts approximately 60 to 90 days under normal use. Its lifespan depends on the number of reeds used and on how well ventilated the room is. More reeds mean more fragrance, but also a shorter lifespan.
Why does Bucharest smell of linden in May?
Bucharest has one of the largest populations of linden trees (Tilia) among European capitals, with thousands of trees planted along its main boulevards and in its parks. Linden usually blooms between late May and early June, and its small yellow flowers release a large quantity of aromatic compounds. The result is a diffuse scent, almost impossible to ignore, unique to those few weeks of the year.
Are Little Paris Atelier candles natural?
Yes. All our candles are hand-poured from soy wax, with a wooden wick. The soy wax we use at Little Paris Atelier is of high quality, and we always strive to keep it that way. Our diffusers are made on a vegan base, with no ingredients of animal origin.
